New Mexicans help in Hurricane Harvey relief efforts

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexicans are answering the call from Texas for help.

Several Red Cross volunteers have already arrived in Houston and two more left Monday. The two complete strangers share one thing in common: they like to help others, especially those in need.

Monday afternoon, two Red Cross volunteers hopped in a van and started their 10-hour drive to help victims in Texas.

One is a retiree and the other is a medical student looking to help those in Texas.

“I like to help people. I think this will be good for me to get clinical experience and things like that,” volunteer Joshua Skeen said.

“You consistently are able to help people during the worst days of their lives,” volunteer Marv Alme said.

That’s why Skeen and Alme signed up to volunteer for the Red Cross. They are leaving to help families devastated by Harvey.

They say with the magnitude of the storm, there is no telling what they could face.

“Last fall I spent three weeks in North Carolina as part of Matthew and that was just a gut wrenching experience there,” Alme said.

The pair is taking some water, snacks and monetary donations. They are expecting it to be a long trip to get there since they have to drive around a lot of flooding.

When they get there, they say they don’t know what is in store for them, but they are ready to give a helping hand to those in need.

Alme and Skeen say they expect to stay out there for two weeks.

Assistance will continue over the next weeks and months, and Texas Governor Greg Abbott says he and all of the local agencies are grateful for the help.

“I’m proud to say that we’ve been receiving so many offers of help from all of our neighboring states: New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, even as far as away as Governor Cuomo in New York is providing resources for us. We’re very appreciative of our fellow states as well as what the federal government has done,” Governor Abbott said.

If you want to help here locally, the Red Cross says you can donate blood or money to the organization. You do so by going to www.redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to donate.
