New ENDWI campaign uses ‘shock factor’ to stop drinking and driving


ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The New Mexico Department of Transportation is trying to catch your attention again with a new ad on the dangers of drinking and driving.

You’ve seen similar ads before featuring New Mexico State Police officers, but none compare to this.

This time, the video shows a drunk driving crash through the eyes of a real emergency medic.

The ad focuses on one of the other victims of a DWI crash besides the driver, illustrating the tragic consequences.

“Some of it is a shock factor. Some people might take a look at these spots and say ‘Wow, this is stuff that really happens on our roadways. We really need to think twice on the actions we are taking,” said Matt Kennicott, Director of Communications, New Mexico Department of Transportation.

NMDOT says the ad campaigns have been working and drunk driving fatalities are going down.

By this time in 2015, there were 31 DWI fatalities. This year, NMDOT says there have been 21.
