ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Westside Albuquerque is getting a new community center.
On Wednesday, the city officials gathered at Pat Hurley Park to break ground on the Joan Jones Community Center.
Jones was a neighborhood advocate who fought for a permanent place for summer and after school programs.
“She’s probably looking down from Heaven today, and she’s really excited that this community center is going to be built, and it will be in her honor,” said Ken Sanchez, Albuquerque City Council.
Officials say they’re hoping the center will help neighborhood kids stay out of trouble.
Just last year, a 14-year-old was shot and killed in a shooting at Pat Hurley Park.
