LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KRQE) – Las Cruces police are using a new tool to get people thinking about drinking and driving.

The department has unveiled the city’s “choose your ride” car.

Half of the vehicle is blue to resemble a police car. It also shows the average cost of what a DWI arrest would cost you: an estimated $7,000.

The other half of the car is painted yellow like a taxi cab with the average price for taxi fare: $20.

“What it is, is to get people thinking about DWI again. It’s kinda having the impact I wanted it to have cause people are talking about it and that’s what I want people to start doing,” said Chief Jaime Montoya.

Las Cruces police say they’ll use the car during school functions and community events.
