Neighbors call for empty lot in Wells Park district to be revitalized

Neighbors have been staring at a large, empty lot in Albuquerque’s Wells Park for nearly a decade. Now they’re wondering, if and when something will ever be done with it?

The nearly two-acre eyesore is riddled with weeds and dirt but also has two real estate signs. Neighbors are begging for someone to step in and buy it.

In the historic area near downtown Albuquerque, it appears strangely forgotten. Neighbors said the space on Sixth Street near the Wells Park basketball court is big, empty and a major eyesore.

“It’s definitely not very pretty,” said neighbor Travis Ruiz.

“It’s full of weeds, it’s not well kept, it just needs some ‘TLC,'” said neighbor Geri Romaro.

Neighbors said about ten years ago, the lot was full of houses, but according to them, they were in such bad shape that those houses had to come down.

“So, now we’re left with this empty lot that nobody does anything with and we’re just wanting to see what’s going to happen,” said Romaro.

According to city records, oddly shaped bits and pieces of the lot are owned by private companies and trusts.

The area, which is directly north of Wells Park and the Community Center, is zoned for residential use.

People who live close by have their own hopes for what might one day take over the empty space, like a market.

“I know Lowe’s [market] is down the street but I think it would be nice to have one here because Lowe’s is a little bit of a walk for us,” said local Andrew Brandt. “I think that’s the closest one in this vicinity.”

“Here in the city we have a lot of basketball courts all over town which is good but something I’d like to see is something like a concrete, outside soccer court,” said local Andrew Brandt.

Despite the differences in opinion, they all agreed that anything would be better than leaving this lot like it is.

“This is, you know, like historic downtown,” said Ruiz. “It’s close to Old Town so it’s always been strange to me that nothing.”
