ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) – Authorities continued to use boats and large vehicles to rescue and evacuate residents in parts of the Midwest where a recent deluge of rainwater and snowmelt overwhelmed creeks and rivers and killed at least one person.

The scramble in eastern Nebraska was expected to wind down as waters crested but that left officials downstream preparing for their battle with likely flooding along the Missouri River.

Law enforcement and National Guard personnel are on alert.
