The Federal Communications Commission say nearly half the calls made to phones in the United States in 2019 will be spam.
The FCC referenced a study in their Report on Robocalls which was released Thursday. It says 90 percent of those spam calls will have familiar caller IDs and that unfortunately there isn’t a way to identify calls as spam before answering.
Officials say the best thing to do to see if it’s a spam number is to let the call go to voicemail. While the FCC is attempting to counter robocalls with things like call tracing and authorization methods, this requires the cooperation of phone service providers.
This is the first report by the FCC that reviews the frequency of robocalls.
