Opioid and drug use impacts marine life

National

Researchers are finding that marine life is absorbing opioids and other drugs released into the ocean.

When people take drugs such as opioids, they release those drugs back into waste water which ends up in the oceans.

Now scientists have discovered that mussels are testing positive for Oxycodone, antibiotics and drugs for depression.

“Those are definitely chemicals that are out there in the nearshore waters and they may be having an impact on the fish and shellfish that live there,” said Jennifer Lanksbury of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Officials say there are systems that filter water and catch a lot of contaminants but it can’t specifically filter out drugs.
