FTC issues warning about nationwide social security scam

National

The Federal Trade Commission is warning people about a nationwide scam.

Scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration are saying your identity has been stolen and you need to send hundreds of dollars worth of gift cards to get rid of an arrest warrant. More than 76,000 people have filed complaints and is bigger than the IRS scam from last year.

“Here what we have are scammers who have decided that it is too recognizable to pretend to be the IRS anymore. They know that they can’t get away with that anymore so they’ve come up with a new angle, a new twist,” said Monica Vaca with the Federal Trade Commission.

The IRS scam took in $17 million in its peak last year. This new scam has already reached $9 million and counting.
