Durango city councilors hope to solve conflict over sign ordinance

Durango city councilors hope to compromise with local businesses over a sign ordinance.

After the Supreme Court ruled sign ordinances may only specify the style of sign and not the language of a sign, city councilors updated the rules. But the changes they’ve made are ruffling feathers.

According to the new ordinance, business owners can only post easel style signs in an alcove of their building to keep sidewalks clear, but not everyone has an alcove.

During Tuesday night’s city council meeting, many business owners asked city councilors to come up with another solution.

Councilors are now asking for input from local businesses at next month’s meeting to find a better solution.
