Underage drinking is incredibly dangerous and can have devastating effects.
A program called “Parents Who Host, Lose The Most: Don’t Be a Party to Teenage Drinking,” encourages parents and the community to send a unified message that teen alcohol consumption is not acceptable is unhealthy and most of all unsafe.
Underage drinking increases during celebratory times, such as homecoming, holidays, prom and graduation, and the program encourages parents and the community to send a strong message that teen alcohol consumption is not acceptable. It is illegal, unsafe, and unhealthy for anyone under age 21 to drink alcohol.
The New Mexico Department of Health using data from 2017 shows that nearly 21% of New Mexico teens start drinking at an early age compared to 15.5% of teens nationwide. The campaign reminds parents that it is a felony to serve alcohol to non-family teens in their homes. The campaign wants to remind adults that there are good legal reasons and good health reasons to delay the start of drinking until people reach the legal drinking age.
