Bees, insects play vital role in healthy gardens

Mornings

As summer inches closer, higher temperatures mean an increase in the number of insects in Albuquerque. Bees are buzzing about and experts say there is no need to worry about them as they are very beneficial to the environment.

According to Annette Colbert with Think Like A Bee, bees, as well as other insects, play a vital role as they help eliminate waste and pollinate plants.

If you see a swarm of bees, let a beekeeper, your local beekeeping chapter, or your local Cooperative Extension Service know immediately before it changes locations, so they can attempt to rescue the bees. In Bernalillo County, the swarm number is the CABQ switchboard at #311.

A local directory of willing swarm catchers is available here.

Nearly all beekeepers dream of catching swarms, since buying bees costs about $150 or more per nucleus hive. Most importantly, you will be helping to sustain one of the world’s most fascinating and beneficial creatures.
