Miss Navajo Nation contest no longer to include fry bread making

News

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (KRQE) – Contestants in the Miss Navajo Nation contest will no longer be making fry bread.

As part of the movement to refocus on roots, the competition will now have contestants prepare more traditional foods.

Fry bread was born from rations given to the Navajos by the government in the 1860’s but Navajo officials think it is time to get to their roots.

The change will challenge young people to practice their ancestral knowledge and heritage.
