Mills is READY for his first head coaching job

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE)- Jeff Mills is the new head football coach at New Mexico Highlands University.

Mills was the former defensive coordinator at UNM in 2012 and 2013. He most recently was the defensive line coach at Indiana State, but he now takes his first head coaching job at New Mexico Highlands.

He takes over a Cowboy team that was 3-6 in RMAC play. His team has a long way to go, but Mills is ready for the challenge.

“We have guys that are hungry, that are willing to learn, that are eager to please,” said Mills. “I am just trying to impress upon them how important it is to compete and compete on a daily basis. You are either competing or you not competing so they have learned that theme.”

He is happy to have his first head coaching job ever, but he is also happy to be back in New Mexico.w

“I love the state of New Mexico,” Mills said. “My wife, my kids, we love this state, and when this opportunity came up, that was the first thing, ‘Wow, we would love to get back and live here.'”

We will see how his Cowboys do next season as they hit the road for their season opener. They will take on Eastern New Mexico University on September 3rd.
