Man responsible for The Carlisle fire had list of other possible targets

News

The man responsible for the torching of a Starbucks, Old Navy, and new apartment building may have had a list with a number of other businesses to target.

It’s a scene that’s hard to forget. The brand new Carlisle Condominiums up in flames in Nob Hill, back in November 2016, just as they were about to open.

There were nine total arson attacks in a ten-day span that included three Starbucks locations.

David Hickman was the culprit and was nabbed after firebombing the Old Navy off I-40 and San Mateo.

He pled guilty to federal charges, but now sentencing documents show he may have had more targets in mind.

A hand-written list found in Hickman’s home shows a variety of other places, like Presbyterian, Dave and Busters, and Urban Outfitters.

“Once he was hitting other retailers, it definitely came to our minds that we perhaps could be targeted,” says Heather Cronin.

Cronin is the manager at Urban Outfitters in Nob Hill.

She says she didn’t take any chances after seeing The Carlisle burn down.

“A few nights, we actually had to hire a night guard who literally just walked around, patrolled our building,” she said. “I was very happy that he was caught so quickly.”

Cronin says it’s scary to think about what would’ve happened had Hickman had the chance to attack her store.

“It’s pretty terrifying to think that you would be a victim of, you know, essentially a terrorist plot,” said Cronin.

Along with the hit list, police also found boxes of ammunition, bomb-making materials, and guns.

Police say they also found a note Hickman wrote where he tells himself to look in the mirror, and ask himself what he’s going to do about the world’s problems.

David Hickman faces up to 20 years in federal prison. He will be sentenced on Thursday.

As for The Carlisle, developers have finished rebuilding it and it’s set to open on May 2.
