An Albuquerque man is accused of intentionally running over a dog and killing it.

Police were called to an apartment complex near Unser and McMahon on Monday and found the dog, named “Chub,” on the ground, injured. Chub later died at the animal hospital.

Witnesses told police they saw Douglas Smith and a woman arguing with the dog’s owner, then get in their SUV and yell, “Kill the dog!” before hitting him.

Smith is behind bars on extreme cruelty to animal charges. It does not appear the woman was arrested.

Smith was in court Thursday and was released on his own recognizance.
