LAS CRUCES (AP) – A man is in custody for allegedly trying to assault two Las Cruces police officers and injure a utility company’s customer.

Las Cruces police say 51-year-old Paul Williams Jr. was arrested Thursday on suspicion of attempted murder and two counts of battery upon a peace officer.

Police were dispatched to what was initially called a robbery in progress in the parking lot of the El Paso Electric Company.

They say Williams allegedly punched a 76-year-old man in the company’s parking lot and stole his $20. The man was taken to a hospital.

Williams also is accused of kicking both police officers and punching one of them in the face.

He’s being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer yet.
