Middle school students are celebrating organ donors in honor of Donate Life month.
April serves as an annual reminder of organ donors’ life-saving ability.
To celebrate, Cleveland Middle schoolers raised the Donate Life flag Friday morning.
There is a special reason these kids take part. One of their teachers has personal experience with it.
Her late husband had two lung transplants. She says it gave her family an extra four years with him.
She wants her students to understand the impact organ transplant can have.
“It not only saves a person, it saves a family. It gave my children extra time with their father and so I believe strongly in organ donation,” said Cleveland Middle School teacher Shirley Munoz.
Officials say more than 700 New Mexicans are on the transplant list, but just one donor can provide life-saving tissue for up to 50 people.
