ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – They will play at home as a number one seed. The Lobo women’s basketball team will host North Dakota in their Women’s Basketball Invitational opener. The Lobos are 20 and 12 on the season while North Dakota is 17 and 14. It’s the first trip to the postseason for the Lobos since 2010.
“It’s been six years for a program that routinely went to the postseason,” said Lobos head coach Yvonne Sanchez. “We had some rebuilding to do. I think we’ve done that. I don’t want to use the word rebuilding anymore. I want these guys to understand. We don’t want spring breaks anymore unless it’s filled with basketball.”
A total of 16 teams are in the tournament. The Lobos have to win four games to be crowned champion.
Although it’s a home game for the Lobos they will not be playing at WisePies Arena AKA The Pit. The Pit has another event the night of the game which caused it to be moved to Johnson Gym.
“It sounds like fun,” said Lobos forward Alexa Chavez.
Coach Sanchez agrees.
“We get to go play in Johnson with 5,000 of our closets friends,” said Sanchez. “I think it’s unique and I think its fun.”
Game time is 7 p.m. Wednesday.
