New Mexico State Police have released updates in a fatal crash that shut down I-25 north of Socorro on Thursday.
Authorities say a two-vehicle crash happened on I-25 near milepost 259 just before 2 p.m. According to police, 76-year-old Jerry Oldenettel from Socorro was driving a Subaru south on the interstate trying to pass a pick-up truck pulling a travel trailer in the left lane.
For unknown reasons, the Subaru struck the end of the trailer where it became stuck and was dragged. Both the Subaru and the pick-up truck caught fire. Oldenettel was taken to the Socorro General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the pick-up truck was not harmed in the incident. NMSP says that alcohol was not a factor in the crash and that seat belts were used properly.
