Twenty-nine officers will soon be patrolling the streets in Albuquerque as they prepare to graduate from a lateral class.

A lateral class is where certified officers from other departments take a condensed 9-week lateral police academy to become an APD officer.

According to The Albuquerque Journal, starting pay for an APD officer is $29 an hour which is significantly higher than what officers and deputies make in surrounding agencies.

That pay increases as officers gain experience.

This comes as a bill is passed approving $3 million in funding for a new 40 member lateral transfer class in January 2019.

APD says 34 cadets are expected to graduate from the training academy in December.
