Lapel video shows police sweep Cleveland High for shooting suspect

Newly released lapel video shows the scary moments inside Cleveland High School as police swarmed the campus looking for a shooter.

Police and deputies rushed to the campus in Rio Rancho in February, scouring the school checking rooms to make sure the student who pointed a gun at classmates and fired off a shot, wasn’t still there.

They quickly heard the suspect, 16-year-old special ed student Josh Owens, had run off toward the mesa. They found his backpack and holster in a nearby tunnel, then found him a couple of minutes later in an arroyo with the gun on the ground nearby.

Rio Rancho police blurred Owen in the video. As they arrested him, he didn’t talk about what he did or why he did it.

Investigators say he had a note on him saying “shoot your ex-girlfriend, shoot other people, then shoot yourself.” His attorneys are arguing he’s mentally incompetent.
