K-9 Ambassador Program eases travel for Sunport passengers

News

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – For many of us, traveling can be stressful; for others, its downright anxiety inducing. By now, you surely have noticed an influx in dogs traveling alongside other passengers; these dogs are known as therapy dogs. They are trained to calm and soothe travelers who otherwise struggle on flights (they are trained to have this effect on people in a number of situations, too).

There is a new ambassador at the Sunport and she is already making a lot of friends. Meet Maggie May, the Sunport’s first dog to be a part of their K-9 Ambassador program. The program is a natural extension of the Sunport’s three-year-old Ambassador Program, in which people volunteer to help travelers navigate their way through the terminal and field questions about the airport and travel.

Maggie May is owned by Sunport ambassador Dr. Victor Strasburger. It took her about 6 months to be ambassador ready, and now you can see and pet her on your way out of Albuquerque at the Sunport.

The K-9 program has been received incredibly well, and they hope to add another 10-15 dogs to the program someday.
