SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (KRQE) – A jockey has been suspended and fined for using an electric prod on his horse.

Antonio Escareno was caught with the prod during a March race at Sunland Park. The electric prod, or buzzer, produces an electric shock that can jolt a horse into running faster.

The racing commission has suspended him for 5 years and fined him $5,000. Escareno has been a jockey since the late 90’s.

The New Mexico Racing Commission has cracked down in the last couple years, after being called out by The New York Times as having one of the worst horse racing safety records in the country.
