Behind the story: What happens to New Mexico’s AMBER Alert cases?

KRQE Investigates

An extended conversation on KRQE's recent investigation

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – As of November 3, New Mexicans have been notified of 11 different AMBER Alerts in 2021 alone, more than double the number in 2020. Fortunately in each case this year, every child has been found safe.

The surge in the use of the alert system and what happens to the suspects’ cases after the alert ends is the subject of a new KRQE News 13 Investigation. In recent interview, KRQE News 13 Investigative Reporter Ann Pierret and Digital Anchor Chris McKee discussed the process Ann took in putting together the story.

Watch the video above for Chris and Ann’s complete “behind the story” conversation about the investigation. For more context on the conversation, watch Ann’s complete story at the link above.

Some of the topics discussed include why New Mexico State Police thinks more AMBER Alerts are being sent out and if the agency is at all worried about an overuse of the system. Chris and Ann also discussed the outcomes of several of the criminal cases tied to alerts sent out in 2021.
