Inmate, former guard face charges for smuggling drugs into jail

BERNALILLO, N.M. (KRQE) – Investigators say an inmate was busy while locked up in a county jail, trafficking heroin.

Ismael Vargas, 29, was in the Sandoval County Detention Center and convinced a corrections officer to help him smuggle the drugs in. That now former guard, 20-year-old Christopher Gonzales, also pleaded guilty to charges.

The crime could get Vargas locked up for four more years.
