SILVER CITY, N.M. (KRQE) – Hundreds have signed a petition to try to stop a multi-billion dollar plan to divert the Gila River. The diversion project is designed to bring water form Arizona into New Mexico. Supporters argue it would allow New Mexico to develop a new source of water. However, the state Wildlife Federation says it would be a burden on taxpayers and lead to environmental damage. The wildlife group is delivering the petition to the Governor’s Office Thursday.
