One after another, the pictures of unique sunburns, caused by ripped jeans, have been flooding social media.
“I definitely think it’s a millennial thing for sure… and as it’s a little bit embarrassing,” said Jordan Velasquez of Albuquerque.
Although it may seem like common sense that you could easily get burned wearing the jeans, exposing areas of skin, people say otherwise.
“When I wear my ripped jeans, I figure I won’t get like a weird sun burn..I think I’m wearing jeans, so I’m fully covered,” said Ariana Krulyac of Albuquerque.
The sun burned victims are even warning other people with messages on their photos to be cautious of the dangers.
“It’s just a wake up call for all of us. We’re all a little surprised that this didn’t occur before or wasn’t noted before,” said Therese Holguin, faculty dermatology with the UNM School of Medicine.
She said this recent development will spark more questions during her consultations.
“Now we will ask about exposures based on the clothing issue, and it is a concern.” said Holguin.
She said although these types of burns may not seem as bad as those on large areas of skin, it still can be harmful.
“When we expose our skin, we’re getting damage,” said Holguin.
