Gunman in custody after standoff with police near Española

News

ESPANOLA, N.M. (KRQE) – Police say one person is in custody after a gunman caused police to shut down Highway 68 near Española.

It happened around 7:15 Friday morning near the Ohkay Owingeh Casino. Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office said a call came in from the man’s employer saying he was a trucker from Colorado and they were worried about him.

Sheriff James Lujan was near the casino and quickly found the man standing in the median of Highway 68. RACSO said that when Sheriff Lujan made contact with the man, he was armed and made comments about suicide by cop, saying that he would point a gun at Sheriff Lujan forcing the Sheriff to shoot at him.

At that point, several law enforcement agencies arrived on scene and shut down Highway 68 in all directions.

After a brief standoff, Sheriff Lujan tazed the man, disarming him and ending the standoff.

Officials say the man was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

RACSO says no shots were fired and that no one was injured.

Highway 68 has since been reopened.
