Group turns in petition signatures for paid sick day initiative

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A group is a step closer to getting an initiative to get paid sick days for every worker in Albuquerque on the November ballot.

The proposal would require employers to offer one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked. That’s up to five days a year for small businesses and seven for larger ones.

Monday, Healthy Workforce ABQ turned in more than 10,000 petition signatures from those in favor of the initiative to the city clerk’s office which will now verify them.

“We need to respect our workers in the city of Albuquerque. Our workers need to be valued and feel like they can take a sick day,” said Adriann Barboa of Strong Families New Mexico.

More than 14,000 valid signatures are needed in order for the measure to get on the ballot. The group has until July 11 to meet that goal.
