Grand jury indicts repeat drunk driver in hit-and-run case

After a mistake initially got the case dismissed in metro court, a grand jury in district court has now indicted a repeat drunk driver for a hit-and-run.

Lorenzo Angel is charged with great bodily harm by vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, and aggravated DWI. Albuquerque police say he was drunk when he crashed into a car on Coors and Central in August last year, then drove off.

The indictment comes after the metro court case against Angel initially got dismissed because prosecutors failed to name a key witness. This had the victim’s family worried that Angel wouldn’t be brought to justice.

“He got handed a free pass to walk away while my daughter’s boyfriend has a plate in his arm for the rest of his life. I mean it’s just not fair, period,” Stanley Archunde said.

One of the victim’s had to have emergency surgery after shattering his elbow.
