SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – There’s a fight over whether the personal information of hunters and anglers in New Mexico is part of public record.
State Land Commissioner Aubrey Dunn recently requested a list of licensed hunters and their email addresses.
A spokesperson for the Land Office says the Commissioner has been working to improve hunting and fishing experiences on state trust lands and wanted to better communicate with those who are affected.
But Game and Fish refused to provide the emails, saying personal contact information is not covered by the Public Records Inspection Act. Game and Fish is now asking a judge to weigh in.
If they approve the release, that information would be available to any member of the public who requests it. A judge will have to decide.
