Forrest Fenn releases new clue about treasure’s location

SANTA FE (KRQE) – Collector and author Forrest Fenn has released a new nugget of information about where he hid a treasure chest containing gold and jewels in a video produced by the New Mexico Tourism Department.

In the New Mexico True Story video, posted online Wednesday, Fenn said the “treasure chest is wet.” Story continues below:

The lure of Fenn’s treasure, with an estimated worth of more than $2 million, has drawn many seekers to New Mexico.

The Santa Fe resident alluded to the treasure in a poem in his self-published memoir “The Thrill of the Chase.” In another book, Fenn published a map of the possible treasure area, spanning four states.

This latest clue could be a jackpot for tourism in the state.

“It’s bringing huge exposure to New Mexico, and it’s kind of the gift that keeps on giving. Every time a new clue is released, it surfaces all over again, bringing exposure to our beautiful state,” New Mexico Tourism Cabinet Secretary-Designate Rebecca Latham said.

Fenn has long maintained the treasure chest actually exists, but it’s been hotly debated. One woman claims she solved Fenn’s poem, saying it’s about a spiritual journey, not material riches.

Latham said they don’t know if it’s real, but they’re going on Fenn’s word.

“Ultimately, only Forrest knows, but we love the idea of people out there searching for treasure in New Mexico and finding something even greater when they return home. A treasure for the soul,” Latham said.

Fenn’s New Mexico True Story racked up thousands of views online in a few hours on Wednesday. The video series was created by the state’s tourism department to tell the stories of inspirational New Mexicans.
