ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A former UFC heavyweight fighter who’s had problems with the law before is in trouble yet again.

According to jail records, Cody East was arrested by Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputies on charges of aggravated battery against a household member, aggravated assault against a household member and false imprisonment. The arrest happened a little before 4 a.m. at a home in the South Valley.

Deputies responded to a home Sunday night in the South Valley and found East leaving the home with his girlfriend who deputies say was visibly upset. They also said she told them the couple had been fighting all day and East kicked her, kneed her in the head, and slapped her. She says East then pulled her hair and said she was leaving with him and if she didn’t East would kill her son.

It’s not the first time the Los Lunas resident has faced serious charges. East was sentenced to three years in prison in 2008 after pleading no contest to three child abuse charges. He completed probation in 2015.

East was signed in February by the UFC with the organization saying it had conducted an independent investigation into East’s past and that it still felt comfortable signing him. He lost both of his UFC bouts, with the most recent fight occurring in October. He was released by the UFC later that month.

East remains behind bars at the jail on a $30,000 cash or surety bond.Correction: The original version of this story referenced Cody East as a UFC fighter. He was dropped by that group in October. The article has been updated to reflect that. KRQE News 13 regrets the error.
