ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A former Rio Grande High School quarterback was killed in a crash deputies say was caused by a drunk driver.

Bernalillo County deputies say Jacob Salazar, 19, was driving northbound on Coors near Las Estancias in southwest Albuquerque when Roberto Lucero drifted over the median and hit his truck head on.

Lucero was taken to the hospital, Salazar died on his way to the hospital. Lucero is believed to have been drunk behind the wheel and will face charges when he is released from the hospital. There is no word when Lucero will be released.

“Once again a young life was cut short by a senseless and preventable act,” said Sgt. Aaron Williamson with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.

Williamson says Lucero has prior criminal charges on his record, including DWI arrests.
