First woman judge for Navajo Nation court system has died

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The first woman to be named District Court Judge in the Navajo Nation has died.

The Navajo Nation confirms that Marie Roanhorse Neswood died at the age of 85.

Neswood is from western New Mexico. She was a District Court Judge from 1967 to 1989.

Navajo council speaker Lorenzo Bates said Wednesday that Newswood represented her community and the rest of the tribe with dignity and pride during her time on the court.

There is no word yet on a cause of death.
