A local firefighter is celebrating a major milestone.
Lieutenant Ron Herrera was recognized Monday for his 45 years of service to Albuquerque Fire Rescue.
Hererra, who holds the record for longest standing firefighter, first started work in 1973.
He says he lives for the action and being a part of a team.
“These young people, these young guys and women, keep me motivated and they accept me. They don’t say, ‘Here’s the old guy again,’ or whatever. I feel accepted,” he said.
Despite having a heart attack on the job six years ago, right now he has no plans to retire.
Hererra says he takes it one year at a time.
