CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – Two safety violations have been issued to contractors working at Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, ending the federal investigation of the site.

It’s been two years since a radiation leak shut down the underground nuclear storage plant near Carlsbad.

Investigators determined it was caused by the wrong type of kitty litter packed into a radioactive pod at the Los Alamos National Laboratory before being shipped to WIPP.

The safety violations have been filed against managers at the LANL and WIPP.

Employees at WIPP are still working to get the plant back open. They believe it will happen sometime this year.
