FDA approved drug forces cancer to self-destruct

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New research from local University of New Mexico doctor shows that new approved drugs can force cancer to self-destruct.

All cells produce a chemical cyclic adenosine monophosphat (cyclic AMP). Leukemia cells pump out cylclic AMP to stay alive, normal cells cannot pump out this chemical.

UNM Cancer Centers Dr. Alexandre Chigaev joined KRQE’s This Mornings team to talk about the new drug. Watch above.

The new drug prevents the Leukemia cells from pumping out this chemical, which causes them to die and has no effect on regular cells.

All the drugs tested are FDA approved. More testing is needed, but by repurposing the already approved drugs could greatly shorten the approval process and get them to Leukemia patients quicker.
