A father of four and a mail carrier for 11 years was killed by a woman who police say was driving a stolen truck while high on drugs.
Lawrence Bennett’s family is distraught. KRQE News 13 spoke with his brother Wednesday night about having to mourn the loss of Lawrence, while hoping his two young kids who were in the car pull through.
“It’s pretty devastating. It’s still setting in,” his brother, Steven Bennett, said. “I mean he just had a way with people and it was just amazing to see.”
Everyone says he was a devoted dad and was beloved by all the people along his Rio Rancho mail route, and his close-knit family.
Tuesday night, Steven got the call that his brother, Lawrence Bennett, was killed, and his young nephew and niece were rushed to the hospital.
Police say while high on drugs, Vanessa Moya crashed into them on Eubank at Central.
“It’s hard to imagine that I’ve lost a family member, especially something over a car crash,” Steven Bennett said.
Police say Moya literally walked away from the crash injury free. A witness followed her for two blocks before officers caught up and arrested her.
Steven says he’s thankful for that Good Samaritan, and the one who got in the car after the accident to comfort the kids.
“My family heard about this and wherever they are, we are thankful for them for doing that for us,” he said.
Steven says his mother is heartbroken.
“It’s devastating for the family, but nothing like it is for my parents,” he said.
Steven says through their grief, they’re trying to focus on the kids, all four of them, that Lawrence was forced to leave behind.
“The death of somebody is not worth driving your vehicle home. You may get away with it once or twice, but then there’s going to be that time where you kill someone, even a family,” he said.
Thursday, grief counselors will be at the Rio Rancho Post Office where Bennett worked.
The suspect in the case, Vanessa Moya, has been in trouble before for drug charges and shoplifting.
