Family and friends gathered Wednesday to remember one-year old Anastazia Zuber, sharing sadness and frustration over her death.

The girl’s parents, David Zuber and Monique Romero, have been charged in Anastazia’s death. Albuquerque Police believe the girl and her two-year old sister were left alone in a bathtub.

“It’s heartbreaking,” said Robert Wilson, a relative of Anastazia Zuber.

Wilson was among the two dozen people who helped organize and attended a candlelight vigil Wednesday night outside the Journey Fellowship Church on Eubank Boulevard NE.

“She was somebody special,” said Wilson. “Now she’s somebody’s guardian angel.”

Anastazia’s body was found by APD detectives last week, buried in the backyard of DJ Zuber’s relative. Police believe Zuber buried the girl after she was found dead in the bathtub of Zuber and Romero’s apartment in mid-December.

Police believe Romero left Anastazia unsupervised in the tub with her two-year old daughter. Romero told detectives she was downstairs on her phone, looking for a job, when Anastazia was killed. An official cause of death is still being investigated by the Office of the Medical Examiner, but police believe Anastazia likely drowned.

“Our whole family is just like I am, they’re angry, they’re distraught, they’re confused, they’re heartbroken,” said Wilson.

As family and friends gathered Wednesday, one family member said he wanted to “just let everybody know accidents happen.”

Wilson and others say they’re still trying to process the death.

“I know they both loved their kids, I can tell you that much, but you know it’s just, I’m confused as to why,” said Wilson.

Romero and Zuber have two other children together who are now in CYFD’s custody.

Prosecutors are trying to keep Zuber behind bars through trial. A judge is set to hear Zuber’s pre-trial detention hearing on Friday.
