Factors to consider before leaving your child home alone

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (KRXM/KRQE) – It’s a tough decision for parents, especially in this day and age: When is your child ready to be left alone? It may have been no big deal when you were growing up, but more and more parents are giving it a second thought, and experts say there’s more to consider than just age.

“A lot of it has to do with personality. Some kids just come out anxious… But then there’s other children that feel capable. They’re very resilient,” explained Child and Family Therapist Heather Thompson.

Thompson says she sees some kids who are 12, 13, 14 years old, but who act like they’re 4 or 5 years old. It’s why she says there is no one-size-fits-all. Each child is different, but she says a close connection between parent and child can help he or she make better decisions.

That being said, experts agree kids must be prepared. That could translate into a first aid or CPR class.

Experts also remind parents to remember the upside of living in the age of technology. Parents can always use Facetime to check in on their children, that way they know whether he or she is home and safe.

For parents who still aren’t sure, experts suggest they ask their kids. They will often tell their parents if they’re not ready.
