Area officials helped warn parents about the dangers of playing and swimming in arroyos or ditches.
Officials with the Ditch the Ditches campaign handed out passes for a free day at the pool as an alternative to playing in arroyos.
They say their goal is zero accidents or drownings.
As the city saw earlier this week, arroyos can quickly fill and the rushing water can sweep anyone inside them away.
Already, one person has died because of those rushing waters.
The event occurred Thursday morning at the West Mesa Aquatic Center.
