ENMU scaling back plans for new stadium

PORTALES, N.M.(KRQE)- It’s half-built but a New Mexico university is now scaling back its plans for its new football stadium because it couldn’t come up with enough money to finish the project.

“The time is now.” Thatโ€™s been the motto for the new stadium that’s been in the works at Eastern New Mexico University for more than two years.

The school expects the new greyhound stadium to be done in July and officials say they are right on schedule.

The athletic department says they couldn’t be more excited for opening day.

“The community is excited about it and you know September 10th can’t come quick enough for us,” Said ENMU Athletic Director Jeff Geiser.

That doesn’t mean they haven’t had to deal with some setbacks.

The budget for the stadium was originally $12 million and has risen now to $14.5 million but they still can’t afford everything they had originally planned, like a hospitality suite.

“The plan you know when you’re having pre game functions with the greyhound club, the hospitality suite would allow us to have catered you know food and so forth and pre game functions and then go right from there into the box seating,” said Geiser.

So for now, the stadium won’t have the hospitality suite above the press box. The school needs another million to build the suite.

ENMU students say even with the setbacks, they are still excited just to get a new stadium.

“It might not be everything they planned for but it’s gonna be good for the school and the community,” said ENMU student Julianna Ortiz.

The school says they still may get more money from the state and that naming rights for the stadium have not been bought yet either.

ENMU is looking for donations to finish the project.

The first game at the new stadium is September 10 against Western New Mexico University.
