LAS VEGAS, N.M. (KRQE) – Endangered toads raised at a New Mexico college are headed to new homes around the country.
Boreal toads are extinct in New Mexico, but students at New Mexico Highlands University have been raising them in a lab.
Now the amphibians are headed to zoos in Detroit, Denver and Staten Island as part of a nationwide effort to preserve the species.
Scientists say a fungal disease is behind the population decline.
