The elevator problems at Carlsbad Caverns are causing other important projects to be delayed.
According to National Park officials, there’s $44 million in backlogged maintenance at the park dating back to 2015. That’s in part because the park has spent the last several years trying to deal with the outage of the elevators, which are a priority.
Other projects that need to get done include work in the park’s sewage lagoon, replacement of signs, improvements to vehicle pullouts, replacement of major electric components in the cave and trail work.
Carlsbad Caverns is just one of many National Parks facing a backlog.
Sen. Martin Heinrich has introduced legislation to cut through the red tape and get all the projects done in a timely manner.
