School is underway a little earlier than usual for a group of Albuquerque Public Schools.

Cochiti, Duranes, and Eugene Field Elementary are among eight APS schools that started Monday.

The schools run off the district’s alternative schedule, which gives students a shorter summer break. However, they then receive more frequent breaks.

Meanwhile, Hawthorne, Los Padillas and Whittier Elementary schools will begin school next week in an effort to improve grades.

They have been targeted for improvement by the state.

The rest of APS starts August 13.
