After-school program aims to teach kids their community’s history

An after-school program is teaching kids their community’s history while biking.

Story Riders is organized by the non-profit, the Center of Southwest Culture.

For two hours, twice a week, fourth and fifth grade students take a bike ride through their neighborhoods and hear stories from people who live there about how the area has changed over time.

“We hope to instill in children a sense of continuity in history, that they are also writing the story of the southwest and their neighborhoods,” program manager Marco Sandoval said.

The program works with students from Valle Vista, Hawthorne, and Dolores Gonzales elementary schools.
