ARTESIA, N.M. (KRQE) – KRQE News 13 is learning more about the threat against law enforcement officers and their families in southeastern New Mexico.
Officials confirm the threats were against eight officers. Officials say the suspects had gone as far as obtaining specific information about each officer, including home addresses and vehicle types.
The plot targeted Carlsbad and Artesia police officers and Eddy County deputies.
A commander says the suspects planned to hire people to carry out the hits using guns and explosives.
The plot was discovered when officers served some warrants as part of a drug investigation.
The commander says they believe the threat has been neutralized with the arrests of 17 people.
Officials say this marks the fourth credible threat like this since the 1990’s.
