DWI suspect found dead in Dona Ana County jail cell

News

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) – Dona Ana County sheriff’s detectives are investigating the death of a drunken driving suspect who was being held at the county jail.

Authorities say 38-year-old Phillip Carrillo was found unresponsive early Thursday inside his cell. First responders tried to revive him but he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Carrillo was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly crashed his vehicle. When officers first transported him to the jail, Carrillo was refused admission by staff because of injuries he received in the crash.

He was taken to a Las Cruces-area hospital where he was treated and then booked into the jail’s medical unit.

A nurse who had checked Carrillo on Wednesday night reported that he appeared to be stable.

Authorities say an autopsy will be done by the state medical examiner.
